In this tutorial series, we will learn how to write Spark applications to process and analyze big data. Spark supports multiple programming languages such as Scala, Java, Python and R, but its native language is Scala. Therefore, we will use Scala as the main programming language to write Spark applications.

Scala is basically based on Java, so if you already have experience with Java, it will be relatively easy to use Scala. Here, we will mainly focus on using Scala rather than explain or go deep into how Scala works (details of Scala can be found on tutorials at tutorialspoint.com). In addition, we will use IntelliJ IDEA as IDE (Integrated Development Environment) to write our code.
